Why you should never settle for less
Why you should never settle for less
I do have
to confess this one, I did make that mistake in my early career when first
landing a job after graduation.
I have
moved to another country directly after graduation and was looking forward to
landing a job and starting my career. I didn’t have Mobile Resume free CV maker
back then, rather I was left to go through so many websites in order to figure
out how to make a CV and what to put it in and then started the journey of figuring
out how to get in touch with recruiters or businesses directly. Having almost
zero experience in all that; however, I did somehow land a few interviews and
attended some of them and apologized to the others.
My first
mistake was I decided to join a company just because the manager seemed like a
decent person and willing to give a fresh graduate a chance not to mention he
did see my potential. He did briefly bring up the salary, but nothing was
confirmed. A few days later, I get a call from the HR and was informed that the
job is mine with a much lower salary than what was expected, obviously he knew
what he was doing, knowing that I am new in the country and I don’t know what
the salaries are like, so long story short I made a decision to settle for what
is offered under the impression that I was already getting a high salary and I will
get an increase on a yearly basis.
Once I signed
the dotted line, everything after that was a nightmare. Apparently, I had to
learn the hard way that if it was only spoken and not mentioned in writing it
has zero value, so all those promises of salary increase and professional
development went straight out of the window.
What made
things worse, was the manager left after six months of me joining, so you can
imagine things not working well for me especially that I couldn’t get out of
the two-year contract at that time.
The reason
why I am sharing this experience is to shed light on the importance of not
settling for less than your worth. Even when you are desperate for a job, bills
are pilling up and barely can afford anything, the thing is you will eventually
figure things out, but being in a situation like mine where I had to wait for
almost two years, knowing that I settled for being an underpaid employee was a
very agonizing period of my life.
However, I did
apply that same experience to every aspect of my life is to never settle unless
it is 100% up to my liking as the last thing I would want to go through is
another experience like the above. Quick fixes are
never a solution as it will always lead to more complications.
